"Looking Back"

Blog Week #16

                                                                           “Reflecting Back on Blogging”

When I first learned we were going to be setting up a blog as one of our class assignments this semester, it was a little intimidating to me because, the only thing I knew about blogging was nothing. I’d never even heard of blogging. Signing up for the Gmail account was probably about the hardest thing to do. I was nervous I was going to mess everything up, but after I learned how to set up a blog the rest was easy. The blog page itself is very user friendly and easy to navigate. After writing a couple of assignments and learning how to post them on my page the whole concept actually became fun to do. Getting to read and comment on your classmate’s blog every week as an assignment, actually helps you get to know them better. I really enjoyed blogging with all of the people in my class and I do plan on keeping my blog going even after the class is over. Hope to keep in touch with all of you after we part. It has been my pleasure. Good Luck to you all!!!

"A Great Time in my Life"

Week 15 Blog

I’ve had lots of great times in my life, but one of the most recent ones is when I graduated from my auto technology class. Not only did I graduate, but I graduated at the top of my class. It was a proud moment for me. When was on stage at the graduation ceremony, I saw hundreds and hundreds of people applauding for their graduating loved ones. As I looked around for my own loved ones I had a smile on my face from ear to ear when I finally spotted them. The looks on their faces said it all. I could tell they were proud. My mom, my wife and my grandkids all took turns taking pictures of me in my blue cap and gown. Prior to that I had never really accomplished anything like that before because of the lifestyle I was living. Nothing good was going to come out of living a life of addiction and crime. And nothing ever did. Just the idea of signing up for classes and attending them as scheduled was a big accomplishment for me. One of the great things about going to school was that I began to learn a lot of new things about myself. I learned I could do just as well as the other students in the class and that in order to accomplish things you have to work hard and do the work. But, I think what made this event great was that my family was very proud of me. Their smiling faces said it all. They celebrated by taking me out to dinner at my favorite Chinese restaurants. We ordered so much food. There was so much food everywhere that the owner had to bring us two more tables so we could set the food on it. There were egg rolls, chop suey, chicken chow mein, almond chicken, noodles, soup, pork, and drinks for everyone. We had a great time, telling stories and laughing.

Three Important People in My Life

When I think about important people in my life three people come to mind and by coincidence they all happen to be women; my grandma Mary, my mom Sandra, and my wife Frances. Each is unique in their own way.

My grandma Mary has been the teacher in my life. When I was three years old she and my grandfather began taking care of me and my brother because my parents weren’t able to. Grandma began teaching me how to cook when I was very young, maybe about nine or so. She thought if I learned how to cook I would never starve. I learned how to cook full course meals and I was and still am good at it. Even after twenty-nine years my wife is still amazed at how well I cook. I also learned how to clean and do laundry. She didn’t want me to have to depend on anyone to do it for me. Besides the basic things such as right from wrong, she taught me how I should treat a lady. She wanted me to be a gentleman at all times. She expected me to open the door for a lady, never use foul language when in a woman’s presence and that sort of stuff. I think I did well by her. Of course there are many important things about her but being a teacher is just one of them.

My mom Sandra is important not just because she is my mom but because she showed me people can change. When I was just a toddler she got into a life of crime and drugs and ended up in prison. Even when she finally got it drugs were still a problem for her. I was in my late teens already by the time she got out so she really didn’t have the opportunity to resume parenting. I saw her going down the same path that landed her in prison in the first place and then all of a sudden she wanted no more of that life. She cut off all ties to the people who were toxic in her life. She quit her drug use and started to become a positive influence on me and my brother. She got a job and eventually remarried. She’s still married to my stepdad and only recently had to stop working because of health issues. Her life went from one extreme to another and when it was my turn to decide to quit using drugs, I looked to her. I knew if she could change so could I and I did.

Lastly, my wife Frances has been an important part of my life because she is my heart; she keeps me on an even keel. When you see us together you could see we are complete opposites of each other; I’m loud and boisterous while she is quiet and demure. But even while being demure she is a strong woman. She stuck by me through my days of drug addiction and life of crime. She believed in me even in the most trying of times. She pretty much raised our kids all by herself because I was always locked up or running around in the streets. And she did a great job. Our kids, thank God, grew up to be responsible adults. Both have professional careers just like their mom. My wife reminds me that I too deserve to be happy in life. She inspires me every day.

Week 13 REVIEW

Reading Fast Food Nation taught me a lot about the different aspects of the fast food industry. One example is, food-borne illnesses,  I learned approximately 200,000 people in the United states get sick from a food borne disease daily; 900 have to be hospitalized and fourteen die. And recent studies have shown that foodborne pathogens can cause long-term illnesses such as, kidney damage, inflammatory bowel disease, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and neurological problems. One of the problems seems to be the meat packing process. Feedlots, hamburger grinders, and slaughterhouses are a means for the pathogens to be dispersed in the food supply. It made me realize we sort of put our lives in the hands of the people in the fast food industry. We have to hope they do their jobs right. Another thing I learned was how marketing to children and adolescents is a problem. The fast food restaurants target kids with foods that aren’t all that healthy for them. They become attracted to these ads and want to eat at the place where you get free toys with your meal or can play in the fun play ground while they wait for their food. There aren’t enough healthy foods on the menus, so they end up eating foods high in calories, cholesterol, and drinks high in sugar; which brings us to the next thing I learned from the book. Obesity in children is becoming an epidemic in the United States. American children between the age of six to ten and are severely obese, are dying from heart attacks that are caused by their weight. And now the epidemic of obesity is spreading to the rest of the world. Fast food restaurants have been popping up in countries around the world. And they too are facing the same health issues associated with obesity.

Week Eleven

“Blog Entry Week Eleven”

Let me start off by saying that this semester of College is not going as good for me as I expected it to. I would say the problem is because my attendance this semester is down and that’s only because of a couple of family emergencies’ that I needed to be present for that were beyond my control. But none the less I find myself falling further and further behind as the semester goes by. Also is the fact that I am having such a hard time with Math 11. I never was any good at math, it was always my hardest subject in school growing up and College math is even a bigger challenge for me. It takes up so much of my time trying to get all the homework done and learn all these new equations that I find myself struggling with all of my classes. This is the first time I have ever had these problems before so I must say it is a little perplexing for me. As far as me staying motivated, well this too is also hard for me this semester. I hate being behind in any of my classes and I especially hate to fail. So with all these factors making it even harder for me to keep my mind on school and continue I now find it even harder to stay focused and keep motivated. I guess the only thing driving my motivation to continue is my will to succeed and not quit. I just hate to fail and that alone is what I use to stay motivated and keep trying. Who knows I may have to take Math 11 again next semester all by itself if I fail it this semester. Maybe that’s the key to my success.

"Something I Changed My Mind About"

Well I guess you can say I have changed my mind about partying. Thats right people im getting older now and I just dont recover as fast as I used to. I mean it's gotten to the point were I have to stay home for a couple of day resting and recovering if I want to party it up for one night. It's just not worth it to me anymore with all the problems that can occure while I'm getting my grove on. I mean think about it, drinking, driving, fighting and you never know who your gonna wake up with if you party like I used to.
Well that was then and this is now, I don't drink or party hard anymore and I have to say It's a lot more easy living life clean. It has changed my life and not only mine but my famalies life has become better as well because I dont have that hard style oflife anymore and we have all become closer as a whole. I even go to Collage now and thats something I never thought I would do in my life and now my family is proud of me in all that I do.

Familia

Family

When I think of family the thing that comes to mind is how important they are to us. They will always be there when you need them and will stick by you through thick and thin. They comfort and encourage you. They give you advice, build you up when you’re down and hope the best for you. Most importantly, they love you unconditionally and never give up on you. This is my family; they were all these things for me. Even when I screwed up and let them down over and over again they never gave up on me. Being raised by my grandparents because my parents weren’t in our lives, they tried to give me and my little brother a sense of normalcy as best they could. They were very much involved in our lives. They made sure we were involved in sports. My grandpa was my baseball coach and my grandmother was our team mother. I have very fond memories of those times from going with my grandpa to buy me a new baseball glove and uniforms to eating from the snack bar and celebrate winning a game by going out to eat pizza. My grandparents were and still are the best.

I’m so thankful for my family. My wife and I feel truly blessed that our children and our family are close. My son and my daughter have been close from the beginning. My daughter was three years old when her brother was born and it seems from the moment we brought him home she became very protective of him. We always used to say “She thinks she’s his mother”. It was so cute.

On the other extreme, sadly to say, there are the dysfunctional families that aren’t very close at all. You could see the jealousy that they have toward each other. Brothers and sisters try to out-do one another. They don’t offer each other help because they’d rather see them fail or not do better than themselves. They spread gossip and rumors about each other. It seems like the sibling rivalry has got the best of them. It’s sad because their children might learn to behave in the same way.

If I could give any advice on family I would say be grateful for the family you have. Uplift one another and always hope the best for them, they are a part of you and you are a part of them.

Student Interveiw

Student Interview

One student attending Oxnard Community College that I had the pleasure of meeting was Julio Lopez. I found him to be very personable and easy to talk to. He is 22 years old and was born in Mexico. He is the eldest of five siblings. Being a role model and mentor to his siblings is very important to him. The two people that inspire him the most are his mother and father. Because of their immigration status they feel they have to work harder. Majoring in sociology, Julio is a full time student and semi pro soccer player. His hope is to achieve a Division 1 university scholarship. One of the things that impressed me the most was his drive and determination. Despite living quite a distance away in Palmdale CA he leaves his home at 5am three days out of the week to attend class and practice soccer here and at times also in Santa Clarita and doesn’t get home until about 9:30 in the evening. He makes sure to sneak in a healthy meal and maintain a well-balanced diet. He knows his hard work will eventually pay off. In the future he sees himself obtaining a bachelor’s degree in sociology and maybe a wife and kids. Joining the military is a possibility and he would like to become a federal officer. He feels having a military background will be helpful in getting to where he eventually wants to be. The three words Julio would describe himself as are driven, motivated, and athletic, and that’s the impression that I get as well. I believe he will achieve his goals.

Graduation Event

                                                            Significant Event in My Life

I was one of those people who started going to college late in life. I think, for me it had something to do with growing up in a home with old fashioned Hispanic traditions and also the lifestyle I chose for myself. In my family no one really talked about achieving a higher education. I guess it was just assumed that we would grow up, get married and start a family just as my parents and my grandparents had done. That would’ve been okay except I chose to go down a darker path in life. During my early teens I began hanging out with the “wrong crowd”. They were the type of crowd your parents warned you about. My life was a downward spiral after that. I dropped out of school and began getting into legal trouble. Drug addiction took over my life and chaos soon followed. There weren’t very many good things that came out of living that type of lifestyle. The only good thing that came out of my life during those troubling years was the girl who eventually became my wife and my two kids. I put them through a lot during those years but they always stuck by me. They believed in me more than I believed in myself. After years and years of troubles I just couldn’t live that way anymore. I decided I was going to change and I did, after many tries. For a long time after getting myself together, I had this empty feeling inside of me. I felt like I couldn’t find my niche in life. One day my wife suggested I take some classes at our local community college. I took it one step further and picked a major. Mechanics has always been an interest of mine so I decided I wanted to major in automotive technology. The program wasn’t always easy, I hadn’t been in a classroom for many years and getting a study routine down was a little difficult for me. I always wanted to be doing other things besides homework or study, but I stayed on track and pushed forward. I had wasted so many years going in and out of jails and prisons, but now I was going to school to better myself and it made me feel like I had a new purpose in life. Going to college helped me gain confidence and pride in myself.

When I think about significant events in my life many come to mind; but my college graduation sticks out the most because it reminded me of something I used to always tell my kids when they were growing up. I used to tell them that if they applied themselves and worked hard they can achieve anything in life that they put their minds to and I really believed that for them, but I never believed that was true for me because of the life that I had led. As a child I never received encouraging words such as those I gave to my kids. No one told me I should finish high school and go to college. It wasn’t because my family didn’t love me or think it was possible but because no one in our family had even graduated high school let alone become a professional. They were all blue collar workers and so was everyone else throughout the generations. To make matters worse when I was a teenager I started hanging out with kids in my neighborhood who belonged to a gang. I began getting in trouble for things like fighting and stealing to drinking alcohol and smoking pot. School was no longer in the picture for me I had dropped out when I was in the eighth grade. I never even give it a second thought. Going to school was just not a priority for me. The lifestyle finally led me to using drugs and committing crimes to support my drug habit. That whole part of my life was nothing good, it taught me nothing positive about life. My so called buddies didn’t want to see me do better. You know what they say, “misery loves company”.  In school I applied myself and I worked hard just as I had always told my kids to do and just as they had always done. I graduated at the top of my class and I was proud. I remember standing on stage and gazing at all the students and faculty and the families that had come out to support their loved ones who were graduating. My family was there too, it took me awhile to find them but I found them. My wife and kids were there along with my grandkids, my mother and my grandmother. I looked at them and thought to myself, now they can finally see me do something good. Now they can be proud of me and not ashamed. To celebrate we all went to my favorite Chinese restaurant. I was overjoyed and excited to know that I was the object of their celebration.

My graduation from college will always remain a highpoint in my life because it was proof that I could do what I set my mind to do. For many years I labeled myself as someone with a past who had no business dreaming a career for myself. These days failure is not an option. I’ve proven anyone at any age with any past can achieve great things with hard work, dedication, and commitment.

TEXTING

Texting has become such a big part of our daily lives. It seems like no one really talks to each other anymore, they just text one another. I can be guilty of that myself sometimes. It’s just so much easier to text someone rather than dial their number, let it ring, wait for them to answer and   if they don’t answer, you have to wait through their voice recording and finally leave a voice mail. Why go through all that when you can just text your message, send it, and wait for a reply. It’s more convenient and to the point. It would be hard to live without texting now that we’ve gotten so used to it. We use our cell phones for texting so much we don’t even give it a second thought anymore. It just comes natural for us.

The worse thing about texting is all those people who text and drive. It amazes me how many people think they can achieve these two tasks at the same time. Lives of innocent people are put in danger. The consequences are real when texting and driving goes wrong. When I see people texting and driving I get so mad because I know my family is sharing the road with these people. They need to think about what they are doing and ask themselves, “Is my text message so important that I need to risk injuring someone else who is innocently sharing the road with me?”

Reality Television

Reality Television

I don’t watch reality shows because I just don’t care to. But, my wife does sometimes. There’s been many occasion when she’ll be watching one of those shows and call me to come quickly and see what this person or that person is doing, done, said or is about to do. It’s all so crazy. Reality television is one of those phenomena we just can’t explain. We watch them, but yet we don’t really know why. I guess it’s like watching a car wreck, it’s gory but yet you can’t turn away. We make fun of these shows and comment on how ridiculous some of the characters are, yet we keep watching them. One particular show that comes to mind is “Jersey Shore”. The guys are muscle heads who are so full of themselves. They walk around shirtless or with the tightest sleeveless t-shirt they can find. They are filmed at bars drinking and acting like fools. And of course what would the show be without sex? So, they pick up girls that will have sex with them on demand. The female cast act pretty much in the same way. They drink till they can’t drink anymore and pass out to the point where they have to be carried home. Is that really any way to behave? They definitely don’t present themselves in a positive way. I think they have a negative influence on our youth. The youth see the cast members getting so much attention from the media and bragging about the large amounts of money they’re making that it seems so alluring. Who wouldn’t want to be on TV and make a lot of money?

It’s not only young people on these reality shows or young people watching these shows. You have the older demographics watching shows depicting bored rich housewives (“Housewives of …), sisters who are married to the same man (“Sister Wife’s), dwarfs and other little people going about their daily lives (“Little People”), beautiful people who are famous for doing nothing (“Keeping up with the Kardasian’s”), and rich Persian’s who party hard and live extravagent lifestyles (“Shahs of Sunset”). There’s something for every one of all ages to watch. It seems like the networks don’t really care what’s being aired anymore so long as it’s making them money. One particular network that comes to mind is the TLC Channel; they have a lot of reality shows. I remember back in the day TLC (The Learning Channel) had shows that were educational and informative. It seems now they show a lot of reality shows and less educational programs. Maybe they should change their name from TLC to something more suitable.

Well, I guess if the ratings continue to be high on these shows, the networks will keep showing them for those who choose to watch them. For sure I won’t be one of those people; I have my own reality to deal with. The only positive thing I can say about these shows is they are entertaining to some people for sure, but REAL, not always. Some of the people who have been on past reality shows no longer on the air have admitted some of their stories or incidents have been scripted. So is reality even really reality?

Blog Entry #2

Jan. 29, 2013

I guess you can say when I was young, fast food was something of a luxury for me and my family and I really didn’t know much about them because there weren’t very many places like that in the early 70’s on the side of town where I grew up. Don’t get me wrong, there was the occasional burrito stand or a frosty freeze on the other side of town along with the one McDonald’s that we knew of but, those two were only vaguely thought about because we didn’t have money for those types of luxuries. We did get to eat at the local Denny’s or the Chinese Garden restaurant every once in a while but truly the best I can remember about eating fast food was the food from the snack bar at the baseball park after one my games or practice and that was only when I shagged enough foul balls for twenty five cents apiece they paid when you returned the balls to the snack bar, I always turned mine in for food. I can still remember the smells of all the different types of foods like French fries, hamburgers, deep fried burritos, and of course my personal favorite, taquitos smothered in cheese and hot sauce. Those were the days.

Even still, I prefer the good old fashioned meals made at home; they are authentic and are so much healthier for you. With home cooking you know exactly what you’re getting and who made it. You hear so many stories about people getting sick because the fast food/restaurant cooks did not prepare the food correctly. Of course it may happen from home cooked meals but not nearly as much.

Unfortunately, fast food meals are convenient. Most parents work and get home so late that they are too tired or don’t have time to cook at home. There are so many places to choose from you could probably eat out every day for two weeks and not have to eat the same thing twice in those two weeks.

My Past,Present and Future

My past , what can I say , it’s been a struggle, to the fact that I was raised by my grandmother along with my brother because my mom was in Prison and my dad was in Viet Nam in the Marine Corp fighting in the War during the years 1968-1969 . It was a hard life because there ,was now six of us in a two bedroom house and my grandmother only worked part time so that left all of us boy’s to fend for ourselves in any way possible and we did. I remember I use to eat a lot of fruit that I would pick off the trees in the neighborhood .Well we all ended up in jail by the year 1985 for various reasons I ended up with a seven year sentence in the California Youth Authority but that was the past.

My Present is here and now and I must say it is going well for not only myself, but for my family as well.  I’m back in school, which I never thought could be possible and the best part is, I’m actually good at this learning stuff. Who would have ever known that all I had to do was show up, listen and do the work that was given to me and the rest will take care of itself. I guess that’s basically true about life in general because if I do what I’m supposed in life then I guess the rest will take care of itself!!

Now my future, what can I say?  I do have some big plans. As far as my education goes, I plan to obtain my Degree in auto technology. I plan on opening my own Auto Shop and I would love to own my own house one day soon!
