"Looking Back"

Blog Week #16

                                                                           “Reflecting Back on Blogging”

When I first learned we were going to be setting up a blog as one of our class assignments this semester, it was a little intimidating to me because, the only thing I knew about blogging was nothing. I’d never even heard of blogging. Signing up for the Gmail account was probably about the hardest thing to do. I was nervous I was going to mess everything up, but after I learned how to set up a blog the rest was easy. The blog page itself is very user friendly and easy to navigate. After writing a couple of assignments and learning how to post them on my page the whole concept actually became fun to do. Getting to read and comment on your classmate’s blog every week as an assignment, actually helps you get to know them better. I really enjoyed blogging with all of the people in my class and I do plan on keeping my blog going even after the class is over. Hope to keep in touch with all of you after we part. It has been my pleasure. Good Luck to you all!!!

"A Great Time in my Life"

Week 15 Blog

I’ve had lots of great times in my life, but one of the most recent ones is when I graduated from my auto technology class. Not only did I graduate, but I graduated at the top of my class. It was a proud moment for me. When was on stage at the graduation ceremony, I saw hundreds and hundreds of people applauding for their graduating loved ones. As I looked around for my own loved ones I had a smile on my face from ear to ear when I finally spotted them. The looks on their faces said it all. I could tell they were proud. My mom, my wife and my grandkids all took turns taking pictures of me in my blue cap and gown. Prior to that I had never really accomplished anything like that before because of the lifestyle I was living. Nothing good was going to come out of living a life of addiction and crime. And nothing ever did. Just the idea of signing up for classes and attending them as scheduled was a big accomplishment for me. One of the great things about going to school was that I began to learn a lot of new things about myself. I learned I could do just as well as the other students in the class and that in order to accomplish things you have to work hard and do the work. But, I think what made this event great was that my family was very proud of me. Their smiling faces said it all. They celebrated by taking me out to dinner at my favorite Chinese restaurants. We ordered so much food. There was so much food everywhere that the owner had to bring us two more tables so we could set the food on it. There were egg rolls, chop suey, chicken chow mein, almond chicken, noodles, soup, pork, and drinks for everyone. We had a great time, telling stories and laughing.

Three Important People in My Life

When I think about important people in my life three people come to mind and by coincidence they all happen to be women; my grandma Mary, my mom Sandra, and my wife Frances. Each is unique in their own way.

My grandma Mary has been the teacher in my life. When I was three years old she and my grandfather began taking care of me and my brother because my parents weren’t able to. Grandma began teaching me how to cook when I was very young, maybe about nine or so. She thought if I learned how to cook I would never starve. I learned how to cook full course meals and I was and still am good at it. Even after twenty-nine years my wife is still amazed at how well I cook. I also learned how to clean and do laundry. She didn’t want me to have to depend on anyone to do it for me. Besides the basic things such as right from wrong, she taught me how I should treat a lady. She wanted me to be a gentleman at all times. She expected me to open the door for a lady, never use foul language when in a woman’s presence and that sort of stuff. I think I did well by her. Of course there are many important things about her but being a teacher is just one of them.

My mom Sandra is important not just because she is my mom but because she showed me people can change. When I was just a toddler she got into a life of crime and drugs and ended up in prison. Even when she finally got it drugs were still a problem for her. I was in my late teens already by the time she got out so she really didn’t have the opportunity to resume parenting. I saw her going down the same path that landed her in prison in the first place and then all of a sudden she wanted no more of that life. She cut off all ties to the people who were toxic in her life. She quit her drug use and started to become a positive influence on me and my brother. She got a job and eventually remarried. She’s still married to my stepdad and only recently had to stop working because of health issues. Her life went from one extreme to another and when it was my turn to decide to quit using drugs, I looked to her. I knew if she could change so could I and I did.

Lastly, my wife Frances has been an important part of my life because she is my heart; she keeps me on an even keel. When you see us together you could see we are complete opposites of each other; I’m loud and boisterous while she is quiet and demure. But even while being demure she is a strong woman. She stuck by me through my days of drug addiction and life of crime. She believed in me even in the most trying of times. She pretty much raised our kids all by herself because I was always locked up or running around in the streets. And she did a great job. Our kids, thank God, grew up to be responsible adults. Both have professional careers just like their mom. My wife reminds me that I too deserve to be happy in life. She inspires me every day.

Week 13 REVIEW

Reading Fast Food Nation taught me a lot about the different aspects of the fast food industry. One example is, food-borne illnesses,  I learned approximately 200,000 people in the United states get sick from a food borne disease daily; 900 have to be hospitalized and fourteen die. And recent studies have shown that foodborne pathogens can cause long-term illnesses such as, kidney damage, inflammatory bowel disease, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and neurological problems. One of the problems seems to be the meat packing process. Feedlots, hamburger grinders, and slaughterhouses are a means for the pathogens to be dispersed in the food supply. It made me realize we sort of put our lives in the hands of the people in the fast food industry. We have to hope they do their jobs right. Another thing I learned was how marketing to children and adolescents is a problem. The fast food restaurants target kids with foods that aren’t all that healthy for them. They become attracted to these ads and want to eat at the place where you get free toys with your meal or can play in the fun play ground while they wait for their food. There aren’t enough healthy foods on the menus, so they end up eating foods high in calories, cholesterol, and drinks high in sugar; which brings us to the next thing I learned from the book. Obesity in children is becoming an epidemic in the United States. American children between the age of six to ten and are severely obese, are dying from heart attacks that are caused by their weight. And now the epidemic of obesity is spreading to the rest of the world. Fast food restaurants have been popping up in countries around the world. And they too are facing the same health issues associated with obesity.

Week Eleven

“Blog Entry Week Eleven”

Let me start off by saying that this semester of College is not going as good for me as I expected it to. I would say the problem is because my attendance this semester is down and that’s only because of a couple of family emergencies’ that I needed to be present for that were beyond my control. But none the less I find myself falling further and further behind as the semester goes by. Also is the fact that I am having such a hard time with Math 11. I never was any good at math, it was always my hardest subject in school growing up and College math is even a bigger challenge for me. It takes up so much of my time trying to get all the homework done and learn all these new equations that I find myself struggling with all of my classes. This is the first time I have ever had these problems before so I must say it is a little perplexing for me. As far as me staying motivated, well this too is also hard for me this semester. I hate being behind in any of my classes and I especially hate to fail. So with all these factors making it even harder for me to keep my mind on school and continue I now find it even harder to stay focused and keep motivated. I guess the only thing driving my motivation to continue is my will to succeed and not quit. I just hate to fail and that alone is what I use to stay motivated and keep trying. Who knows I may have to take Math 11 again next semester all by itself if I fail it this semester. Maybe that’s the key to my success.
